Whether your family is celebrating the 4th of July or another July celebration, it is important to do whatever you can to make sure everyone is safe and having a good time. By using the correct precautions, accidents can be more easily avoided. With the right treats, the whole day can become a little tastier and more enjoyable.

Keep the Bugs Away

Mosquitos are one of summerโ€™s biggest pests. Harsh chemical-laden sprays are usually used to keep the bugs at bay. However, this can irritate the skin and can cause other minor health issues. Luckily, Grandmaโ€™s Pure and Natural, who happens to be one of our great vendors, has a solution.ย

This business makes bug-deterring soap out of all-natural ingredients– no chemicals. It does not contain any DEET either! This means it is safe to use on both children (ages 8+) and adults, alike. This product is used just like any other bar soap; simply lather up and rub the soap on any areas of the skin that pesky mosquitoes might have access to. Just keep it away from your eyes and youโ€™ll be fine. The soapโ€™s effects last for about 3-4 hours and it cannot stain clothing. What could be better?

Read Food Labels

Sometimes it can be difficult to know what exactly to get for a summer barbecue. Having family members or friends with food allergies can make the task even harder. For this reason, make sure to read the ingredient labels on whatever you plan on serving. Some of the most common allergens to watch out for include eggs, wheat, soy, milk (dairy), and peanuts/tree nuts. When it comes to barbecues, buns, side dishes, and desserts are the most common offenders, as most meat products do not contain allergens.ย

Sample Oklahoma has a great July subscription box that can help you out with your grocery shopping. Some of the food items included are BBQ sauce, meat rubs, chip dip, coffee, and patriotically colored candy popcorn. The food labels on all of these products are sure to be easy to read. The only foods with any major allergens in them will be the chip dips and possibly popcorn. If you are worried, just give the ingredients a second look-over and save any ingredient labels for others to read.

Check Local Weather Reports

One rainy cloud can ruin a day at the beach, so it is important to make sure that you check the weather forecast ahead of time. Heavy rainstorms in June have raised the water levels at many beaches as well. This can make the lakes dangerous to swim in, especially if you are not a strong swimmer to begin with. Water levels are expected to stay at higher-than-average levels throughout the 4th of July weekend. Make sure to check the weather before any other July celebration as well.

Before you make big plans for the holiday, make sure to check out some local news websites to ensure that your favorite picnic spot isnโ€™t closed. The Edmond city officials have already closed down Spring Creek. Several docks are closed at Arcadia Lake, and may remain closed throughout the weekend. It all depends on the weather. Check the weather and make sure to have a backup plan– just in case.

Celebrating the 4th of July, as well as any other July celebration, is supposed to be a fun event for friends and family. By keeping the bugs away, making sure the food is safe for everyone, and checking on the weather, you can better-prepare for anything that might come your way.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day weekend!
