African Americans were living in Oklahoma long before it became a state in 1907. Like many other early African Americans, many were brought to the Oklahoma territory as slaves and were freed at the end of the Civil War. After they gained their freedom, many went on to become homesteaders. Since then, Oklahoma has become home to many famous and historical African Americans who have shaped Oklahoma’s legacy.
