Usborne: Children’s Books That Inspire

At Sample Oklahoma, every purchase benefits a local non-profit. Purchases made this month benefit Single Parent Support Network. All donations benefit the mission of empowering single parents to raise their children to be healthy and contributing members of society! Single Parent Support Network has donated “Shepherding Horses” by local Oklahoma author the late Kent Humphries, to the first 150 Sample Oklahoma purchases this month!

According to an article written in the Oklahoma Watch, 29% of Oklahoma fourth graders and 26% of eighth graders were at or above proficiency in reading in the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress, compared with 34% and 32% nationally.

An article in the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise states “In Oklahoma, 12 percent of adults over the age of 18 functioned at the below basic literacy level and 31 percent of adults were at the basic literacy level.”

These statistics are especially true in low income and single-parent households. Many programs have been put into place to try to combat Oklahoma’s literacy shortcomings because it is a problem that affects all Oklahomans!

Data shows that having books in the home in the early development years and continuing with age-appropriate books through adolescence improves a child’s vocabulary, comprehension, problem-solving abilities, imagination, and creativity.
