However, these businesses need your help if they are going to be able to compete with big box stores and chain restaurants. Below are a few things the average person can do to support their favorite local small businesses.

1. Order More Takeout

Sometimes you just don’t want to cook and that’s okay! The average go-to for ordering food usually comes in the form of ordering from some app. While that’s well and good, companies like UberEats make it so the restaurants don’t get as much money from each order as they would if customers were to order directly from them. So, instead of using these apps, it’s much better to order from restaurants directly. You can do this easily by checking out the restaurant’s website or by calling them. Most restaurants in the state will offer take-out orders, even if they do not do deliveries. Here is a short list of some family-friendly restaurant options around the state. 

2. Avoid Amazon

Online shopping is fun and great, it’s best to avoid Amazon and websites like it when possible. There is nothing wrong with these websites, per-say, but it does take away business from local family shops. Again, this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t shop online at all. Lastly, buying gift cards at any local business is a great help. Not only does buying gift cards give the shop a little extra money, but it also has the potential to introduce new customers to the business. Every small business owner loves the free advertising that comes with word-of-mouth of happy customers. Gift cards also make great presents when you know your loved one would like something from a shop, but you don’t know exactly what. Either way, both the business owner and your loved one is sure to appreciate the gesture.

Supporting local businesses is easier than it seems. It just takes a little extra conscious effort to make sure you are shopping at small businesses instead of going to a one-stop large box store or buying from a chain. You may always know what to expect from a chain, but you are sure to be surprised by what a small business may have to offer!
